The Friulian truffle is a mesenteric truffle which takes its name from the Latin "mesentericum", which means "similar to the intestine" due to the characteristic circumvolute shape of the veins of the gleba, its innermost part. It was first described in 1831 by Vittadini and is also called ordinary black truffle and truffle of Bagnoli (from the locality of Bagnoli Irpino).
