Autumn is mushroom season, excellent vegetables with various nutritional and beneficial properties: they are rich in vitamins (especially B vitamins, but also vitamin D when exposed to sunlight), minerals such as potassium, copper and selenium, and fiber, which promotes intestinal well-being and satiety. They also provide protein, are low in calories and contain antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and support the health of the immune and cardiovascular systems.
In particular, we are talking about mycotherapy, those mushrooms that are used as supplements especially in traditional Chinese medicine.
Medicinal mushrooms support the body's general well-being thanks to their properties, which include: strengthening the immune system, adaptogenic action (helping to manage stress), anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They are also used for their beneficial effect on the gastrointestinal system, to help regulate the cardiovascular system, improve memory and combat fatigue.
Main benefits:
- Immune system: they are used to stimulate a weak immune system and to moderate it in cases of excessive reactivity (e.g. in autoimmune diseases).
- Stress and fatigue: they have an adaptogenic action that helps the body manage stress, combat fatigue and regain physical and mental energy.
- Gastrointestinal system: their prebiotic properties promote the balance of intestinal flora, support the gastric mucosa and help with problems such as irritable bowel syndrome.
- Cardiovascular health: they can help regulate cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and some specific mushrooms may have an anticoagulant effect.
- Cognitive function: some mushrooms can help protect the brain and improve memory, while also supporting neuronal regeneration.
- Antioxidant action: they help combat oxidative stress, slowing down ageing and protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.
- Sport and performance: they can improve athletic performance, increase energy and aid post-workout recovery.
Some medicinal species used in Chinese medicine are:
- Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum): nicknamed the "mushroom of immortality" in traditional Chinese medicine, it is an adaptogen used to support the immune system, manage stress and improve sleep.
- Cordyceps: used in Tibetan and Chinese medicine, it is said to improve cellular energy, physical performance and support kidney and lung health.
- Shiitake (Lentinula edodes): in addition to being used in cooking, it is known to support the immune system, lower cholesterol and as a potential adjuvant in oncology.
It is essential to use certified, organic products and consult a doctor or qualified herbalist before using these mushrooms, especially if you are already taking medication or have pre-existing medical conditions.
